Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence

AIM To increase participants knowledge and confidence around sexual violence and how to support survivors who disclose to them.
At the end of the course participants will have:
- Knowledge of the key legislation relating to sexual violence and estimated prevalence
- An understanding of the difficulties faced by survivors related to disclosing sexual violence
- Considered some common responses to a disclosure and their usefulness
- Knowledge around provision of ongoing support following receipt of a disclosure of sexual violence
This course is for staff who want to learn more about responding to the needs of survivors of sexual violence both upon receipt of a disclosure and in the longer term. It will cover relevant legislation and prevalence, examine the barriers survivors can face when seeking to disclose and access support and allow participants the opportunity to identify effective responses to survivors throughout their support journey. Through presentation, discussion and group work, participants will have the chance to reflect on the challenges faced by sexual violence survivors and determine how to respond to these appropriately. The course material is relevant regardless of the survivors’ gender and whether the sexual violence has occurred recently or historically.
