LivingWorks Start (Suicide Prevention Training)

Public Health Leeds have been successful in receiving a grant to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention training during COVID-19. This has enabled this MHFA online training courses to be accessed free by anyone who meets the below criteria:
Individuals working in Leeds supporting people at experiencing or at risk of poor mental health and meeting ONE or more of the below criteria:
1. Frontline staff working in the 3rd sector
3. Small businesses
AIM – To teach participants four basic steps to recognise if someone is having thoughts of suicide and how to connect them with resources that can help.
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
• Recognise those who may be at risk of suicide
• Ask individuals clearly and openly about their thoughts of suicide
• Connect individuals at risk to local sources of help
LivingWorks Start is a 90-minute online training program that will teach you how to recognize when someone is having thoughts of suicide and take meaningful action to keep them safe. The course is for anyone over the age of 13 and no formal or prior suicide prevention training is needed.
This course has been developed by LivingWorks, the same organisation that developed safeTALK and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). These courses are regarded as the global golden standard in suicide prevention training. Accessible via any computer, smartphone, or tablet, you’ll learn about suicide and its prevention, receive personalized information, and gain a series of skills to keep someone safe and alive.
In addition to completing the online training participants will also be expected to attend a 2-hour workshop facilitated by an experienced Suicide Prevention trainer. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the skills learned during Living Works Start in a safe and supportive environment. These workshops will take place online via Zoom.
