Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) - Bursary

Full cost of the two day course is £199.  Bursaries are available for individuals who live in Leeds and work for any of the following Leeds based organisations.  If your bursary is successful the full cost is £55.

  1. An organisation working directly with men of working age
  2. West Yorkshire Police or Transport Police
  3. A housing organisation
  4. A domestic violence organisation
  5. A substance misuse service
  6. An organisation in LS11, LS12, LS14, LS15, LS8, LS9
  7. A secondary / further education establishment
  8. A primary care setting (non GP staff)
  9. A bereavement service

If your Bursary application is successful, the cost of the 2 day course will be £55.00. The remainder of the course fee will be paid for by the Bursary Fund.  In order to qualify for this subsidised rate of £55.00, delegates MUST attend ON BOTH DAYS of the course.

AIM  To teach Suicide First Aid skills to raise confidence and knowledge and to familiarise participants with the most widely used suicide intervention model in the world

At the end of the two-day course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the ways personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions
  • Provide guidance and suicide first-aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs
  • Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it
  • Appreciate the value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community at large
  • Recognize other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care

Recognised by the Department of Health, ASIST is fast becoming an essential tool for all community caregivers.  This is a two-day course that aims to break down stereotypes and misinformation about suicide and gives participants an evidence-based approach to those at risk.  Participants will have a chance to analyse their own views about suicide, they will be introduced to the intervention model and given opportunities to observe and practise skills in effective suicide intervention.
