Young people and early intervention in psychosis

aspire

aspire is a specialist service for people aged 14-35 in Leeds in the first three years of experiencing psychosis.

The community-based, multi-disciplinary team has input from Leeds Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and works closely with other statutory and non-statutory services in the city.

The team accepts referrals from all sources. Clients assessed by the service are experiencing psychosis for the first time.  They receive assertive support from the service for up to three years, including a wide range of interventions.

aspire works closely with GP surgeries (primary health care), young people's services and mental health services, and carers. The service operates Monday to Friday 9.00am to 6.00pm with some hours on Saturday.

In three words, aspire's principles and values are engagement, hope and recovery.

The service aims to:

  • make sure that young people with psychosis get help quickly and reduce the duration of untreated psychosis
  • help people to get well quickly and to stay well (promoting recovery and prevention of relapse)
  • help young people with psychosis not to need other mental health services such as hospitals
  • keep working with clients in an active and consistent way (engagement)
  • give support and expertise to other services who are working with young people with psychosis
  • contribute to reducing suicide in this age group
  • raise awareness of psychosis in the community and reduce the stigma
