Community Links Mental Health Support Service
The Community Links Mental Health Support Service for adults over 16 years helps women and men with mental health support needs in their own home and local community. The areas of Leeds that the service covers are: Chapeltown, Harehills, Headingley, Woodhouse, Burley, Little London, Meanwood, Barwick-in-Elmet, Scholes, Colton, Halton, Wetherby (and surrounding areas such as Bardsey, Clifford, Bramham, Boston Spa) and some parts of Moortown and Roundhay.
The service is available seven days a week, from 9am until 7pm, and on most public holidays. Fourteen Community Mental Health Support Workers work individually with up to eleven service users each. Two members of the team work specifically with clients from Asian and African/Caribbean backgrounds.
The service recognises the key roles played by a range of mental health professionals and carers (who can be friends, partners and family) in supporting clients. It aims to work positively alongside a service user’s support network giving practical, emotional and social help.
Some problems that can affect people with mental health support needs and their carers are:
- poor coping at home
- isolation
- self-neglect
- loss of social and living skills
- low self-esteem
- reduced leisure and work chances.
The Community Links Mental Health Service works with clients and their carers to assess areas such as disability, identifying strengths, resources and hopes before making plans with the client to get the most out of opportunities to improve their quality of life. The support work is at the client's pace and takes a longer term view allowing time to build a sound relationship.
